 Over Denise Jannah

Een lied is een lied en een gedicht is een gedicht, tweelingsterren die van lieverlede ver uit elkaar zijn gedwaald maar ooit samenvielen, en die alleen door een tovenaar nog wel eens bij elkaar worden gebracht. Denise Jannah is zo’n tovenaar,  want ze kent de taal van de muziek en de muziek van de woorden. Hoe vaak heb ik in Nederland niet een mooie tekst horen verpletteren onder het tralala-geweld van een ingebeeld zangwonder – bij Denise Jannah blijven zowel muziek als tekst hun eigen waarde behouden, een tweeheid in eenheid. Ze ‘vertolkt’ geen gedichten, wat vaak tot artistiekerige resultaten leidt, tot hollandse horlepiep, bij haar versmelten de woorden en de muziek zodat ze samen naar een hoger plan worden getild, met een kosmopolitisch, latijns-amerikaans aureool. Elke gewild-literaire benadering is haar vreemd. Ze kust de gedichten als het ware moeiteloos wakker. Bij Denise Jannah hoeft de poëzie niet in dienst te staan van de muziek, omdat poëzie voor haar van nature muziek is. In haar composities hebben de gedichten die ze koos opnieuw een thuishaven gevonden, een thuishaven waaruit de poëzie – en dat is het wonder dat ze zingend bewerkstelligt – nooit lijkt te zijn weggeweest.

 On Denise Jannah

A song is  a song and a poem is a poem, twin stars who once formed a unity but through the times drifted far apart, only every now and then brought together again by a magician. Denise Jannah is such a magician, for she knows the language of the music and the music of the words.  How many times have I not, In Holland, heard a beautiful set of lyrics being crushed under a tralala-eruption by an imaginary vocal miracle  –  with Denise Jannah music as well as lyrics get to keep their own value, a two-some in unity. She doesn’t ‘perform’ poetry, which often leads to semi-artistic results, to Dutch “horlepiep’ (type of Dutch folk music, ed.), no,  with her the words and the music melt together as one in such a way that  they are being upgraded to a higher plan, with a cosmopolitan, Latin-American aura. Any forced-literary approach is unknown to her. She so to speak kisses the poems to life, without any effort. With Denise Jannah poetry does not have to serve the music, since to her poetry is music, in the most natural sense. In her compositions the poems she chose have, anew, found a safe haven, a safe haven from which the poetry – and that is the miracle that she while singing accomplishes – seems to have never been gone in the first place.
