Denise Jannah was born in Suriname, South America. With her family she moved to Holland in the mid seventies. For 4,5 years she studied Law at the University of Utrecht , but her love for music made her change her course: she enrolled into the Conservatory in Hilversum and completed her studies there, also earning her degree as a vocal educator.

In 1989 she won third prize at the Internationales Liederfestival “Menschen und Meer” in Rostock, former D.D.R.  In that year she also was offered an important part in the musical “A Night at the Cotton Club” in which she starred in 347 performances in Holland, Germany and Belgium.

 

Her first album, “Take It From The Top” she recorded in 1991 with Timeless Records (Wageningen, Holland ). In that same year she won the “Golden Microphone” at he National Jazz Vocal Contest in Breda, Holland. 1991 was also the first year (of many) in which she performed at the international North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague, Holland.

In 1992 Jannah won first prize at the international Golden Orpheus Festival in Burgas, Bulgaria. There she also won third prize in the extra competition where the contestants were required to sing a composition by a Bulgarian composer (not necessarily in Bulgarian).

In 1993 Denise Jannah recorded her second album for Timeless Records: “A Heart Full Of Music”. This album was recorded in New York. For this album she received her first Edison Jazz Vocal Award (important Dutch music award, comparable to the US Grammy Award).

All through the years Jannah’s musical activities included numerous concerts in clubs, theaters and concert halls, teaching, and appearing in many television- as well as radio programs.

In 1995 she was contracted by the prestigious label Blue Note Records (New York, USA). Her first album with them was “I Was Born In Love With You”. On this album she was featured also with a Big Band. (Recorded in New York)

In 1996 she recorded a ‘cross-over’ album, a mix of different styles, titled “Different Colours”. She performed in the “EBU Jazz Night” from the European Broadcasting Union, broadcasted ‘live’ in 16 European countries.

Also in 1996 was the premiere of the movie- documentary  “Denise Jannah, New Lady In Jazz” made by renowned Dutch film director Hans Hylkema, who is known for his music documentaries.

Among the highlights in 1997 was her performance for the European Union in The Hague, Holland in the Hall of Knights in January, and performing in May in the same Hall for Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of Holland, former president Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham-Clinton, and heads of states of Europe in the "commemoration of 50 Years Marshall Help Plan for Europe”. In the meantime she had toured in a.o. Chili and Japan. 

In 1997 Jannah was offered one of the leading parts in “Joe, The Musical”.

In 1998 Denise Jannah and Marjorie Barnes were the leading ladies in Fats Waller’s musical show “Ain’t Misbehavin’ ”, (European Tour). The “Ain’t Misbehavin’ “ cast performed for Mrs. Rodham-Clinton when she hosted a reception during her visit to Holland that year.

In 1999 Jannah’s fifth album was released: “The Madness Of Our Love”, also on Blue Note Records and recorded in New York. This album was nominated for the Edison Jazz Vocal Award. Also in 1999 she performed at the prestigious “Spoleto Festival” In Charleston, South Carolina (USA). In a huge ‘live’ broadcast  (54 countries) during the change of the Millennium Jannah performed the song "Different Colours, One Rainbow" (her own lyrics) with about 100 children at the Dam Square in Amsterdam. The program was called “Hello 2000”. Also in January she opened the Barbados Jazz Festival, at the same time opening for Wynton Marsalis’ Lincoln Centre Jazz Orchestra. Apart from leading her own group Jannah had also performed several times as a featured guest with the Willem Breuker Collective.

In 2000 their album “Thirst!” was released, on which Jannah performed 5 songs. She was again nominated for the Edison Jazz Vocal Award for her contribution to Willem Breuker’s album. The Willem Breuker Collective has been around for 27 years and has toured all over the world. Jannah has joined them on trips to Italy, Switzerland and France.

In July 2000 Jannah was presented with the Edison Jazz Public Award, during her 7^th appearance at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague, Holland.

In 2001 Jannah performed in Curaçao for the Curaçao Jazz Foundation, and at the festival “Jazz en Tête” in Clairmont-Ferrand, France. In 2002 she performed at “Printemps du Jazz” in Nîmes, France.

 

Denise Jannah is a person of many interests. She is a vocalist actress, educator, theatre vocal coach, composer and lyricist, who has made her mark in the world of jazz but who does not at all shy away from other styles like Latin, Fusion or World music. She claims her artistic freedom and loves to blend styles, of course also including her rich Surinamese cultural background. She is multilingual, from which she also benefits in her music. Jannah has been teaching Jazz at the World Music department of the Conservatory in Rotterdam, Holland for several years. Numerous have been her private classes, workshops and master classes. As a theatre vocal coach she has worked with theatre companies as “De Nieuw Amsterdam” and “Theater Cosmic”, both in Holland. She has been a vocal coach for 7 theatre productions so far, including “Antigone” and "Regenboogvrouwen" (For "Coloured Girls Who Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Was Enough" from Ntozake Shange, USA). She was last vocal coach for “Romeo ‘N Juliette, A Caribean Xperienz” from Theater Cosmic, spring 2003 and "Ajax From Africa" from th New Amsterdam Fall 2003.

 

Denise Jannah has been featured as a guest with numerous bands, groups and orchestras throughout the years. Besides touring with her own group she has, among others, performed with the Orchestra of the Royal Dutch Navy, the Orchestra of the Royal Dutch Air Force, the Royal Police Orchestra, The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Rosenberg Trio (she also toured Holland with them in the fall of 2002), the Cyrus Chestnut Trio (USA), the renowned Dutch men’s choir Maastreechter Staar, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band (USA), the  Metropole Orchestra, the Holland Big Band, the Dutch Jazz Orchestra, the Bob Belden Big Band (USA), the Berget Lewis Gospel Train and of course the Willem Breuker Collective. She has furthermore shared the stage with distinguished colleages such as the well-known soul singer Eddie Floyd, (“Knock on Wood”), jazz veteran extra-ordinaire vocalist Jon Hendricks, pianists John Hicks and Kenny Barron.

International tours and/or performances included countries such as Suriname, South Africa, the Caribbean, the Netherlands Antilles, Canada, Japan, Indonesia, several European countries and the United States.

Jannah has also performed for the Dutch Crown Prince Willem Alexander and his wife Princess Maxima, former president Kenneth Kaunda from Zambia and former president Nelson Mandela from South Africa, and on a separate occasion for Mr. Mandela’s wife Mrs. Graça Machel Mandela.

 

In the fall of 2003 she played one of the leading parts in the music theatre production “Jona” from Willem Breuker (Willem Breuker Collective) and Karel Deurloo, based on the book of Jona from the Bible.

 

Early 2002 Jannah started to set poetry to music, and has been singing poetry in literary festivals in Holland, Suriname, South Africa, Aruba, the Netherlands Antilles, and Indonesia. On January 17 2004 her first album containing only vocal poetry was released, and titled “Gedicht Gezongen” (Poetry Performed). Geboren in een zeer muzikaal domineesgezin in Suriname als oudste van vier dochters, begon Denise Jannah na het behalen van haar diploma Gymnasium A aan de Universiteit van Utrecht aan de studie rechten. Zij studeerde daar vier en een half jaar, maar maakte deze studie niet af daar haar hart al steeds meer naar de muziek trok, zoals eigenlijk haar hele leven al het geval was geweest. Zij trad al geruime tijd in verschillende allround formaties op toen naar het Conservatorium in Hilversum ging, afdeling lichte muziek.

Tegen de tijd dat Jannah afstudeerde was haar eerste album reeds een feit (“Take It From The Top”, Timeless Records ’91, geproduceerd door Chris Ellis), en had zij een van de hoofdrollen gespeeld in de musical “A Night at the Cotton Club”. Verder had zij op 2 internationale festivals reeds prijzen behaald: de derde prijs op het Liederfestival “Menschen und Meer” in Rostock, voormalige D.D.R. (’89)en de eerste prijs op het festival “Golden Orpheus” in Bulgarije (’92). Er deden resp. 12 en 14 landen aan deze festivals mee.

In 1991 won zij eveneens de Gouden Microfoon op het Nationaal Jazz Zangconcours te Breda en stond zij voor de eerste maal op het North Sea Jazz Festival.

In 1993 nam Jannah in New York haar tweede album “A Heart Full Of Music” op, geproduceerd door Hein van de Geijn, waarvoor zij in 1994 haar eerste Edison ontving.  Intussen was zij regelmatig te zien en te horen in diverse radio- en tv-programma’s. In 1995 volgde een internationaal contract bij platenmaatschappij Blue Note Records; voor de ondertekening daarvan kwam Bruce Lundvall, president van Blue Note speciaal naar Rotterdam. In datzelfde jaar verscheen de cd “I Was Born In Love With You”, eveneens opgenomen in New York. Ditmaal was er ook een Big Band bij betrokken, o.l.v. Bob Belden. Dit album werd geproduceerd door Gary Giddins.

 In 1996 verscheen het cross-over album “Different Colours” (Blue Note), geproduceerd door Bart Fermie en Jannah zelf, en trad zij o.a. op tijdens de “European Jazz Night” welke ‘live’ in 16 europese landen werd uitgezonden.  In dat jaar vond ook de première plaats van de filmdocumentaire “Jannah, New Lady in Jazz”, gemaakt door regisseur Hans Hylkema.

Hoogtepunten in 1997 waren optredens voor de top van de Europese Unie in de Ridderzaal in Den Haag, en later dat jaar in diezelfde zaal voor Koningin Beatrix, het toenmalig presidentsechtpaar Bill en Hillary Clinton en de staatshoofden van Europa i.v.m. de herdenking van het 50-jarig jubileum van het Marshall Hulpplan voor Europa. Ook internationaal rees haar ster, hetgeen resulteerde in tournees in o.a. Japan en Chili.

In musicalland had Jannah in ’97 opnieuw haar opwachting gemaakt in een van de leidende rollen in de musical “Joe, de Musical”. Een jaar later schitterde ze als een van de twee leading ladies samen met Marjorie Barnes in de musical show “Ain’t Misbehavin’ “ van Fats Waller; zij was de enige niet-Amerikaanse in de cast.

In 1999 verscheen Jannah’s vijfde, in New York opgenomen, album: “The Madness Of Our Love” (Blue Note).  Evenals op haar twee voorgaande albums staan op dit album ook weer een paar teksten en composities van haar eigen hand. Voor dit album kreeg Jannah een Edison – nominatie.

In datzelfde jaar stond zij met groot succes op het prestigieuze “Spoleto Festival” in South Carolina, USA.

Tijdens de millenniumwisseling stond Jannah voor Holland met een honderdtal kinderen op de Dam in Amsterdam in een wereldwijde televisie-uitzending: “Hallo 2000”, waar zij het lied “Different Colours, one Rainbow” zong (eigen tekst). De uitzending was in 54 landen ‘live’ te volgen.

In januari 2000 opende zij het “Barbados Jazz Festival”. Het tweede concert die avond werd gebracht door het Lincoln Centre Jazz Orchestra o.l.v. Wynton Marsalis.

In juli 2000 werd aan Jannah tijdens haar (7^e) optreden op het North Sea Jazz Festival de Edison Jazz Public Award uitgereikt, zij had een derde van de op het internet uitgebrachte stemmen van het publiek gekregen. Tevens kreeg zij een Edison nominatie voor haar vocale bijdrage aan het album “Thirst!” van het Willem Breuker Kollektief, waarop zij als gastvocaliste vijf stukken zingt. Met dit reeds 27 jaar bestaande orkest werkt zij al enige jaren op gezette tijden en met grote voldoening. Samen traden zij ook reeds op in Italië, Zwitserland en Frankrijk. Ook deze samenwerking typeert Jannah’s veelzijdigheid.

Zij heeft enige jaren les gegeven aan het Rotterdams Conservatorium, en legio workshops en masterclasses, zowel in Nederland als in Suriname en de USA. Ook is Jannah reeds meerdere malen als vocal coach betrokken geweest bij theaterproducties, waaronder “Antigone” en “Voor vrouwen die in regenbogen geloven maar ook zelfmoord overwogen” van Theatergroep De Nieuw Amsterdam en “Romeo ’N Juliette” van Theater Cosmic.

Denise Jannah heeft door de jaren heen met de meest uiteenlopende formaties op het podium gestaan. Naast optredens met haar eigen combo was zij een geziene gastvocaliste bij o.a. de Kapel van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht, de Koninklijke Marinierskapel, het Rotterdams Symphonie Orkest, het mannenkoor De Maastreechter Staar, de Bob Belden Big Band (New York), het Cyrus Chestnut Trio (idem), de Dutch jazz Orchestra, de Holland Big Band en de Carnegie Hall Jazz Band (New York) en de Berget Lewis  Gospel Train, naast het hierboven reeds genoemde Willem Breuker Kollektief.

In 2001 ‘deelde’ zij een van de avonden van het festival “Jazz en Tete” in Clairmont Ferrand (Frankrijk) met Chick Corea, en gaf zij een groot openlucht concert voor de Curaçao Jazz Foundation. In september dat jaar trad zij alle zondagmiddagen op in de gerenommeerde Blue Note Jazz Club in New York.

In 2002 tourde zij met het Rosenberg Trio langs verscheidene theaters in Nederland. Verder heeft zij eerder samengewerkt met o.a. Ernst Daniel-Smid, Mathilde Santing en Donald Jones in de productie “Gershwin” van de American Songbook Productions, met Karin Bloemen, Izaline Calister, de soulzanger Eddie Floyd (Alabama, USA) en de jazzcoryfee zanger Jon Hendricks (New York). Eind 2001 stond zij met o.a. Frank Boeijen en Stef Bos in het muziekproject “Ons Kruispaaie” in Stellenbosch, Zuid Afrika. Zij zong in verschillende europese landen, maar ook in landen in het Caribisch Gebied, in Suriname, de Nederlandse Antillen, Canada, de U.S.A. en Zuid Afrika.

Intussen heeft zij ook opgetreden voor oud-president Kenneth Kaunda van Zambia (London, 2000) en Nelson Mandela (tijdens het “Faranani” (=Saamhorigheid) Concert dat op 7 juni 2002 als  eerbetoon voor hem georganiseerd was en live uitgezonden werd vanuit Theater Carré te Amsterdam).

Vanaf eind 2001 is Jannah begonnen ook gedichten te zingen, waarvoor ze zelf de muziek componeert. Dit heeft haar uitnodigingen opgeleverd voor diverse literaire festivals, behalve in Nederland (“Winternachten” in Den Haag, januari ’02 en  “Spraakmakers” in Utrecht, (november ‘02) ook in Suriname (“Het Woud der Verwachting” in Paramaribo, november ‘02) en Zuid Afrika (“Time of the Writer” in Durban en het “Cape Town Festival” in Kaapstad, beide maart ‘02). In april 2003 stond zij op het literaire festival “Winternachten – Krusa Laman”  in St. Maarten, Aruba, Curaçao en Bonaire. Zij was voor augustus 2003 uitgenodigd gedichten te zingen op Bali en in Indonesië.

Denise Jannah was als vocal coach betrokken bij de productie “Romeo ’N Juliette, A Caribean Xperienz” van Theater Cosmic. Een reprise van de vorige editien (’01), nu voor de grote theaterpodia; de premiere was op 8 maart ‘03. Ook was zij als vocal coach betrokken bij de productie “Ajax uit Afrika” van Theatergroep DNA (De Nieuw Amsterdam), waarvan de premiere op 4 december ’03 plaatsvond.

In oktober en november 2003 stond Jannah  samen met Jasperina de Jong, Frits Lambrechts, Marcel Beekman en Pieter Hendriks in het muziektheaterstuk “Jona, de Nee-zegger” van Willem Breuker (muziek) en Karel Deurloo (libretto). De muziek werd verzorgd door het Willem Breuker Kollektief en de Mondriaan Strings, de zang door de 5 solisten  en het Koor Nieuwe Muziek. Dirigent was Rene Nieuwint.

Tijdens het literair festival “De Winternachten” in januari 2004 te Den Haag heeft zij haar eerste literair-vocaal  album, “Gedicht Gezongen”, gepresenteerd, met alle muziek van eigen hart en hand.

In februari en maart 2004 zal zij als een van de vocale solisten te zien zijn met de Fra Fra Big Band: Fra Fra Big Band with Voices”.
